When you check out the five-kilometer city waterfront, it's like an invitation for a relaxing bike ride by the sea, soaking in the city vibes. The bike path links the port to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, cruising past cool spots like the White Tower, Alexander the Great monument, and the famous "Umbrellas" artwork by Greek artist Yorgos Zongolopoulos. With the refreshing sea breeze and neatly lined pine trees, it's a chill journey, even on a sunny day. The infrastructure for cyclists on the waterfront is smart, with good planning and even special crossings for people walking across the bike path.

You can easily rent bikes along the waterfront, with popular spots like Thessbike near Aristotle Square and the Concert Hall, and Bike It right by Makedonia Palace hotel. They've got more than just bikes – electric scooters and four-person bicycle strollers with sun or rain protection are up for grabs. Prices kick off at 3-5 euros per hour, and all you need is your passport or ID for the rental.

It is worth considering that Thessaloniki embankment is practically the only comfortable place for cyclists. Due to heavy traffic, chaotic parking and hilly terrain, other parts of the city are hardly suitable for cycling. However, amateurs often explore the surroundings of upper Thessaloniki on bicycles - the green areas of the foothills of Choriatis. Keep in mind, though, that a journey like this calls for some solid physical readiness.

Hiking in the foothills of Horyatis

If tackling the local hills on a bike seems tough, no worries – you can explore them on foot. The forested hilly area near Thessaloniki is filled with hiking trails, especially around the Choriatis foothills. You'll come across small rivers, ancient ruins, and soak in the quiet of nature and fresh forest air.

For those who love panoramic views, the trails lead to spots with nice setups – gazebos and tables for a chill time after your hike. For instance, check out the Panorama Choriatis or Cara Tepe observation deck to take in Thessaloniki and the coastline. To some places you can get by a car, while a ublic transport option is not available. Either way, starting early in the morning is a good call to fully enjoy the local nature and scenery.

The extensive coastline around Thessaloniki provides a range of water activities to dive into. You can give kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or even windsurfing a shot. Choices are abundant, and along the waterfront, you'll often spot groups of paddle boarders or boaters cruising with the sun setting in the background.

The heart of this water fun in the city is the Sailing Club of Thessaloniki, situated on the newer section of the promenade. For a more nature-focused experience, head to Angelochori, a small village near Thessaloniki airport, where flamingos hang out, and Active Sport CLUB Watersports is up and running. The club rents pads and canoes starting at 10 euros per hour.

You'll also find small SUP rental shops during the summer on many beaches around Thessaloniki, in Halkidiki, or near the village of Epanomi. Just keep in mind, being a good swimmer is a must for these rentals.

Basketball is a big deal here, matching the popularity of tennisy. Greece is a basketball nation, the country's team has won the European Championship twice. A true national idol is the Greek-Nigerian basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the most successful modern NBA players.

Such popularity of professional basketball helped popularize it at the amateur level. As a result, in every district of Thessaloniki there are several sites for this game. All you need is a ball and good company.

For the best view, hit the basketball court next to the tennis court on the waterfront. Another cool spot is on the western side, near the port and Vardaris fortress ruins. And if you're looking beyond the center, there are plenty of special places for a game.

Billiards

A bit more laid-back but equally loved in Thessaloniki is billiards. You'll find dedicated places in the city, and many bars also have a few billiard tables for guests.

Right in the heart, around the Kamara area, there's LOGIN Billiards hall where you can also enjoy a game of ping pong. Another billiards center, with the bonus of table football, is close to the Concert Hall. If you're in Kalamaria, there's a spot called TenPin where folks also gather for some bowling fun.
