In the very beginning of the peninsula of Sithonia, a small settlement is located. It bears a wonderful name of Metamorfosi, which perfectly suits thick pine forests, clean beach with fine sand and cozy bays with the moored fishing boats.

A small village of Metamorfosi, which had been founded by the refugees from the East, turned into a wonderful vacation spot in Greece.

How to get

Metamorfosi is located 90 km from Thessaloniki airport. You can get there by bus. To do this, you need to take the bus No.78 (the fare is €1). The first bus starts its way at 5:50 a.m., and the last one — at 11 p.m. There are 20-minute intervals between the departures. You should reach the KTEL Halkidiki bus station by this bus. There you have to make a change for a regular bus that costs €8-9. It takes about 2 hours to reach the destination.

The best option in terms of time and cost is a transfer. If you order it via the application in advance, you can save up to 15% on this trip compared to the cost of a cab from the airport.

What to do?

Since one of the best beaches of Halkidiki that is marked with a Blue flag is located in Metamorfosi, the outdoor activities are represented with a wide range of water entertainment — diving, windsurfing, fishing and sea cruises.

There are several good beach bars along the coastline. You have to pay for the opportunity to use an umbrella and a sun lounger, or find a bar that works on a system of "sun lounger for a drink. By the way, you can buy an umbrella in the small beach shop on the coast.

Shopping

There are few souvenir shops that are large enough — there you can buy toy magnets for a fridge, decor items, honey, olive oil and natural cosmetics. There are also independent specialized shops where you can buy Greek dainties (Olive Center). Of course, full-fledged shopping here will not work, if you want to buy something of clothing, you need to go to larger towns: Nikiti, Nea Moudania.

Recreation with children

Metamorfosi is a perfect place for vacation with children. The village has several large parks near the coast where you can walk during the daytime. You can find playgrounds everywhere. Many taverns will make advances for you and prepare children's food. In the evening, the quiet and measured way of life is not disturbed by loud music from night bars and clubs.

The village also has a small Luna park. It will seem boring for older children, but the kids will definitely like it.

Leisure for adults

There's not much to do here at night. So either take the wine and cheese and go to see the sunset on the beach, or rent a car and go to the neighboring villages with a more eventful nightlife. For example, to Neos Marmaras.

Where to stay?

Apartments

Local residents often rent the apartments out during the high season. There is not much real estate in the village, so there are not many options, too. But if you book in advance, you can find something.

Villas

This type of accommodation is very developed in the village, so you can choose the ideal option for you — with a swimming pool or without it, close to the sea or rather far off, with an outdoor space or without it. Most often the villas are not located in the center, but on the outskirts of the village or nearby. This option of accommodation is in wide demand among families with children.

Hotels

You can give a confident “4” to the hotel life here. There are no luxury five-star hotels, but there are good pet-friendly hotels like Porto Matina Hotel, Simeon Hotel and 4-you boutique.

Porto Matina Hotel offers guests three-star accommodation with their favorite four-legged friends. The hotel boasts a large well-arranged area. You can walk your cat or dog in the blooming park in the morning, and in the evening sit on the outdoor terrace with a glass of wine or beer. The hotel has its own small beach with straw umbrellas and sun loungers.

Simeon Hotel is also classified as a 3-star hotel. Guests never feel bored here. The entertainment team is constantly working upon the improvement of the entertainment program for children and adults. Live music evenings are often held at the end of the day, fun competitions for families take place at weekends, and every morning all the guests can join water aerobics, fitness or yoga groups. There are special playgrounds for children. The hotel has two swimming pools.

If you are looking for a level of service that is a couple of stars better, then there are several 4-star hotels westwards from the village that are located on the first coastline. And to the east from the village there is one of the most luxurious hotels called Danai Beach Resort.

If you like to camp wild, then you can find several campsites on the coastline. The only children's camp in Halkidiki with a huge swimming pool and a daily entertainment program is also located here.

What to taste?

Breakfast

For a light and hearty breakfast, go to Green Place. This small, but very cozy place will please the sweet tooth and not only them. Here they make crispy Viennese waffles (also known as crepe) with a ball of cream ice cream, crispy and chocolate toppings. There is also a Russian alternative — common pancakes with sweet or salty filling that are familiar to everyone. If you are indifferent to sweets, the menu includes sandwiches, fried eggs, omelets and French fries. Among drinks, you can choose frappe, cappuccino, juice, tea and milkshake with a large head of whipped cream. The advantages of the establishment include a large range of fresh fruit. If you are going directly to the beach after visiting it, you can take a couple of apples, bananas and peaches with you. Also don't forget about ice cream. There are 10 types of it here — from pistachio to blueberry.

If you carefully take control of your diet during the vacation and do not allow even a crumb of junk food and sweets, we recommend visiting Nektar juice bar. Fresh squeezed juices (orange, pineapple, apple, pomegranate, watermelon), fruit salads, light smoothie bowls with blueberries and banana, small sandwiches with pita, tomatoes, cucumbers and feta will not leave any vegan or vegetarian hungry.

For those who are on the side of evil with cookies and waffles, who are not surprised by ordinary sweets, the establishment Loxandra Cafe Creperie works. It is the exact place where you can get acquainted with traditional Greek dainties. Did you know that the Greeks can cook a very tender pudding with citrus flavour from ordinary semolina porridge? It is called galaktoboureko and tastes like pastry cream. And from ordinary rice and milk, the locals cook a dessert called rizogalo — its taste is very similar to ice cream. It is served chilled with fruit and chocolate drops. You can also try kourabiedes. Despite the fact that these shortbread cookies are considered to be a traditional Christmas treat, the Greeks like to eat them throughout the year. Also don't forget about halva, the Turkish delight and pakhlava.

Lunch

Taverna Vasilis 1985 is the place where no one will stay hungry. The hunger quickly capitulates under the attack of an army of grilled octopuses, fried surmullet, delicious dzadziki, huge portions of vegetable salad, olive oil and cheese. One plate is quite enough for two adults. In addition to fish dishes, there is a good range of meat dishes here. The side dishes for each of them are selected perfectly. The establishment is popular among both locals and visitors, as the food is very tasty, and the staff is friendly.

Cafe-Pizza LA STRADA is a small cafe where you can taste a traditional Italian dish interpreted by Greeks. If in Italy they tend to minimalism — for example, the best Neapolitan pizza consists of thin dough, tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil leaves, — then here they strive to prepare a hearty high-calorie dish. In addition to pizzas, the menu includes French fries, dzadziki and various salads.

Supper

Tavern Liana is the place where we recommend you to see the sunset and to enjoy a sumptuous dinner that consists of a light cream-cheese snack with herbs, a traditional salad with tomatoes, olives, cucumbers, a large bowl of fresh mussels, a handful of fried shrimp and a huge portion of grilled fish with vegetables and herbs.
